Dumanjug mayor stands firm on decision to ban cellphones in schools
CEBU CITY – The mayor of Dumanjug, Cebu is standing firm on his decision to ban the use of cellphones in schools within the municipality.
Mayor Gungun Gica reminded school heads, district supervisors, and parents that starting Monday, June 29, students will not be allowed to use cellphones while in school.
“There are no phones allowed in school. Starting Monday, if a student brings a phone, it will be confiscated and only returned at the end of the school year,” Gica said in a Facebook post.
The banning of cellphones is one of the security measures being enforced in schools in response to the recent tragic shooting at the San Jose National High School in Tacloban City.
Gica is determined to push through with the cellphone policy that he even challenged parents opposing it to enroll their children outside Dumanjug.
“If you do not wish to follow this policy, you have the option to transfer your children to another municipality,” said Gica.
Gica said not allowing students to use cellphones at school will benefit them.
“We want our kids to read, study, and interact with their classmates. At home, we expect parents to talk to their children, follow up on what they learned in school, and encourage healthy relationships between siblings and parents,” he said.
Gica said the local government will explore more measures to ensure the safety of students especially on their way home.
One of the plans being considered is the purchase of school buses for students. “We will make sure your kids get home safely,” Gica said.
