The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said Sunday, June 28, that it has delivered relief supplies to isolated villages in Sarangani province and Davao Occidental as it accelerated its disaster relief operations in communities hit by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Mindanao.
PCG spokesperson Commodore Noemie Cayabyab said the Coast Guard Aviation Command utilized a CGH-1452 aircraft to conduct three aerial humanitarian assistance and disaster response (HADR) missions to Barangay E. Alegado in Glan, Sarangani on June 26.
The operation successfully delivered 135 boxes of relief goods from the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), 100 bags of relief goods, and 20 boxes of bottled water from Coast Guard District Southern Mindanao (CGDSM).
“Flight operations concluded safely at approximately 12:01 p.m., marking another successful humanitarian mission with no untoward incidents recorded,” the PCG reported.
Simultaneously, the Coast Guard District Southeastern Mindanao (CGDSEM) dispatched the BRP Malamawi (FPB-2403) to transport the second batch of humanitarian aid to earthquake-affected families in Balut Island, Sarangani, Davao Occidental.
The maritime shipment included 7.1 tons of food packs, tents, and water which were donated by the Archdiocese of Davao, the Diocese of Tagum, and the Diocese of Mati. The mission was executed in coordination with Caritas Philippines and the DADITAMA Social Action Network.
“The mission builds on CGDSEM's ongoing maritime support operations, ensuring that critical aid reaches island and far-flung communities that remain difficult to access through land transport alone,” the PCG said.
To recall, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake shook Maasim, Sarangani last June 8, killing 81 people and injuring 1,315 others. Thirty-one individuals remained missing as of this writing.
More than 1.6 million individuals or 382,000 families were affected across 626 barangays in Zamboanga Peninsula (Region 9), Davao (Region 11), Soccsksargen (Region 12), and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said the disaster has caused P1.46 billion in infrastructure damage and P9.5 million in agricultural losses, underscoring the need for sustained relief operations in affected communities.
