A rebel returnee and three of his companions were injured after engaging policemen in a shootout in Arayat, Pampanga, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said on Sunday, June 28.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. said the policemen went to Barangay San Juan Baño on Saturday night after local residents asked for police assistance over a group of men engaged in indiscriminate firing in their barangay.
Local police, backed by operatives from the Provincial Mobile Forces Company and Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT), went to the area and spotted a man firing a gun.
They then cautiously approached them and gave instructions to drop the weapon and surrender. But instead of yielding to the police order, one of them opened fire at the approaching policemen.
This was followed by bursts of gunfire from men positioned inside a compound near the store.
No policemen were injured and the incident triggered an exchange of gunfire that later led to the wounding of four people involved. They were taken to the hospital for treatment.
Nartatez expressed gratitude to the local residents for their trust and confidence in the PNP, adding that their concerns were immediately responded to through quick response from their local police.
He said this incident only proved once again that peace and order is also anchored on strong PNP-community cooperation and mutual respect
“HIndi na uso ang siga-siga ngayon. Your Philippine National Police will make sure that the rule of law always prevails in the interest of peace and order, and the peace of mind of all our kababayan,” said Nartatatez.
Police immediately secured the area and seized a .45 pistol, an M16 rifle, a 12-gauge shotgun, a .38 recover, a Carbine and a hand grenade.
During a background check, it turned out that one of the injured suspects was a former communist rebel who surrendered in 2018.
The rebel returnee involved used to head the "Ka Arlet Group" (Pintados Group), which reportedly operated in the provinces of Pampanga and Bulacan, and was previously affiliated with the Rebolusyonaryong Hukbong Bayan (RHB).
Court records also revealed that the same former rebel was previously charged with Murder but eventually dismissed. Information also indicates that he is presently employed as a Forest Ranger in Arayat, Pampanga.
Police are conducting background checks on three other injured suspects, including their possible involvement in criminal activities.
