The parental instinct of the teachers and a principal prevented what could have been another school tragedy involving two students of a high school in Aparri, Cagayan.
It started when school authorities sensed that something was off when the students suddenly cut classes and the information they received was that they were harboring grudge against fellow students.
True enough, the two students—a 14-year old Grade 8 student and a 15-year old Grade 10 student—yielded a .38 revolver and a knife when police searched their bag based on the request of the principal.
Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr., chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), said the prompt action of both the school authorities and the local police prevented a potential security threat and reinforced ongoing efforts to keep schools safe for learners
“I commend our personnel for their quick response and the school authorities for their alertness and for exercise of good judgment. This is proof of what proper coordination and cooperation can achieve to ensure the safety of school zones and the welfare of our learners,” said Nartatez.
The incident happened two days after police also foiled another possible school violence in Tolosa, Leyte when authorities monitored that a female student had been making attack threats on her schoolmates.
The difference is that unlike the two students in Cagayan, the female student in Leyte had no access to a firearm.
Police earlier stepped up coordination with the Department of Education (DepEd) following the recent fatal shooting inside a school in Tacloban City that left three students dead and 20 others injured.
Police units across the country have been directed to remain alert to possible threats and to work closely with school officials in preventing incidents that could endanger students and teachers.
Nartatez also directed the concerned police units to conduct a thorough investigation to determine why the students attempted to bring the weapons inside the school.
Meanwhile, he said the PNP would continue working closely with school officials to ensure that every learner can study in a safe and secure environment.
Nartatez likewise urged parents to closely monitor the activities of their children and to work hand in hand with schools and the police in promoting the safety and well-being of students.
