Philippines, Colombia sign tourism pact as diplomatic ties mark 80 years

The Philippines and Colombia have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) aimed at strengthening tourism cooperation and expanding exchanges between the two countries as they celebrate eight decades of diplomatic relations.

In a Facebook post, the Philippine Embassy in Colombia said both countries view the tourism agreement as an important instrument for strengthening exchanges between Filipinos and Colombians.

Given the socio-cultural and economic dynamism of both countries, Manila and Bogotá see the MOU as an effective platform for expanding cooperation and fostering closer ties between their peoples.

“The MOU covers six major areas of cooperation, including research, education and upskilling, tourism promotion and investment, and sustainability,” it said.

According to the Colombian Embassy, the agreement was the result of several years of diplomatic work and coordination led by its mission in Manila.

The embassy said it had consistently pushed for closer engagement between Philippine and Colombian authorities as part of efforts to build a more dynamic and diversified bilateral agenda.

The MOU was signed on June 18 by Colombian Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism Diana Marcela Morales Rojas on behalf of Colombia and Ambassador Adrian Bernie, representing the Philippine Department of Tourism.

The signing ceremony was attended by Catalina Diana Dávila Suárez, director for Asia, Africa, and Oceania at Colombia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as representatives from the ministry's international cooperation office and the Presidential Agency for International Cooperation of Colombia.

The agreement seeks to facilitate closer cooperation between tourism authorities and stakeholders in both countries as they work to increase visitor exchanges and promote tourism-related investments.

The signing of the agreement coincided with the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Colombia, which both countries described as a reflection of the strong state of bilateral ties and their shared commitment to expanding cooperation.

The Philippines and Colombia established diplomatic relations in 1946 and have steadily expanded cooperation in trade, education, culture, agriculture, and development cooperation over the years.
