The French Embassy in Manila once again brought a beloved Parisian tradition to the Philippines as Ambassador Marie Aude Françoise Lassalle ep. Fontanel hosted “La Fête des Voisins – Soirée en Blanc” at the embassy residence on May 15.
Originating in Paris in 1999, “La Fête des Voisins” (Neighbors’ Day) was created by Atanase Périfan to encourage neighbors to reconnect over a shared meal and conversation at a time when urban life had left many people disconnected from those living just next door. What began as a simple neighborhood initiative has since grown into an international celebration observed by millions around the world.
The Manila gathering reflected that same spirit. Guests, dressed in white, filled the embassy gardens for an evening of French hospitality, enjoying a menu that combined French classics with Filipino flavors. The white dress code, inspired by friends of the ambassadorial residence, symbolized peace, friendship, and unity.
Ambassador Fontanel, who has hosted the gathering annually since arriving in the Philippines, noted how naturally the tradition resonates with Filipino culture.
The low buzz of lively exchanges filled the air as guests in radiant white embodied peace, unity, and the spirit of celebration.
Recalling the origins of the celebration, she said it began because “you live in a big building, in a condo, and you don’t even know anymore who is your neighbor.”
“That’s why we are all here together tonight, to celebrate once again the fact that we are all neighbors, all friends,” she said.
The ambassador also shared that she drew inspiration from the friendship fostered by the Amigas y Amigos (ANA) Group, observing that the Filipino tradition of hospitality and community mirrors the values at the heart of “La Fête des Voisins.”
Closing the evening with her trademark phrase, Fontanel invited guests to continue the “French-ship” between France and the Philippines, a lighthearted reminder that diplomacy is often strengthened not only through official engagements, but also through simple moments of fellowship around a shared table.
More than a social gathering, the annual Soirée en Blanc has become a celebration of one of diplomacy’s simplest yet most enduring ideas: that lasting friendships often begin as conversations between neighbors.
