Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso vowed to expand open green spaces in the city as he joined the observance of Philippine Arbor Day 2026 on Thursday, June 25.
Domagoso, together with Vice Mayor Chi Atienza, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Juan Miguel Cuna, and other officials, participated in a tree-planting activity aimed at promoting environmental protection.
“Hindi lang tayo nagtatanim ng puno, nagtatanim tayo ng pag-asa para sa susunod na henerasyon (We are not only planting trees, we are planting hope for the next generation),” Domagoso said.
The mayor said the city government fully supports the national government’s environmental programs, especially efforts to expand green spaces in highly urbanized areas.
“Kaya sinabi ko po kay Secretary Cuna na maaasahan nila ang buong suporta ng Pamahalaang Lungsod ng Maynila. Kung may bahagi kaming magagawa para sa kalikasan, gagawin natin (That is why I told Secretary Cuna that they can count on the full support of the Manila City government. If there is anything we can do for the environment, we will do it),” he said.
Domagoso said that while Manila remains focused on basic needs such as housing, education, healthcare, and livelihood, the city will also continue improving open spaces to make communities cleaner and more livable.
He said even small vacant areas may be converted into green spaces as part of the local government’s environmental efforts.
“Here in Manila, we will, and we will not stop, to create open green space in our own little way,” Domagoso said.
The mayor also cited the city’s plan to plant 100,000 bamboo trees to help address pollution and support flood mitigation.
He said bamboo can help improve air quality and absorb water, which is important for a highly urbanized city like Manila.
Domagoso thanked the DENR and environmental groups for choosing Manila as one of the sites for the Arbor Day activity.
He said the city government will continue working with national agencies and partner organizations to protect the environment and provide cleaner surroundings for future generations.
