Marcos to visit Canada from July 1-4 for talks on defense, trade, energy cooperation

President Marcos will travel to Canada next week for an official visit aimed at strengthening strategic and economic ties between Manila and Ottawa, Malacañang announced late Friday, June 26.
In a statement, the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) said the President will visit Canada from July 1 to 4 upon the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
During the trip, Marcos and Carney are expected to hold bilateral talks to further deepen the Philippines-Canada partnership and expand cooperation in key sectors.
Among the issues expected to be discussed are defense and security engagements, trade and investment opportunities, economic resilience, energy cooperation, critical minerals, and people-to-people exchanges.
The two leaders are also expected to exchange views on the Philippines' chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and strategic priorities for the region.
Canada has been an ASEAN Dialogue Partner since 1977 and has maintained a Strategic Partnership with the regional bloc since 2023.
Business, investment push
A major focus of the President's visit will be attracting more Canadian investments to the Philippines.
Marcos is scheduled to meet with Canadian business leaders and investors in sectors considered critical to the country's economic agenda, including information technology, business process management, artificial intelligence, critical infrastructure, and critical minerals.
The administration has been aggressively courting foreign investors as part of efforts to generate jobs and sustain economic growth.
Meanwhile, the President is set to engage with members of the Filipino community in Vancouver, British Columbia, during his visit.
First visit in over a decade
The trip will mark the first official visit by a Philippine president to Canada in more than a decade.
The last such visit was undertaken by former president Benigno Aquino III in 2015.
Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, meanwhile, last visited the Philippines in 2017 for the ASEAN Summit in Manila.
First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos is expected to accompany the President during activities with overseas Filipinos in recognition of their contributions to both the Philippines and Canada and to the longstanding ties between the two countries.
Canada is home to nearly one million people of Filipino origin, making Filipinos among the country's largest immigrant communities.
The Philippines and Canada celebrated the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2024.
The two countries have steadily expanded cooperation in trade, defense, maritime security, labor, education, and climate action.
Manila and Ottawa have also strengthened their partnership in promoting peace and security in the Indo-Pacific region amid growing geopolitical challenges.
