Three people were injured early Friday morning, June 26, when an ambulance collided with a sport utility vehicle (SUV) at the intersection of Quezon Avenue and D. Tuazon Street in Barangay Lourdes, Quezon City.
CCTV footage showed the SUV crossing the intersection from D. Tuazon Street when the ambulance struck it.
The SUV overturned, while the ambulance continued forward and slammed into the center island.
The impact crushed the front of the ambulance and shattered its windshield. Its 42‑year‑old driver and two companions were injured.
The two senior citizens inside the SUV, who were on their way to work in Cubao, escaped unharmed.
Another CCTV angle showed that the traffic light for vehicles along Quezon Avenue was already red when the ambulance entered the intersection.
The SUV driver said they were crossing properly after getting the green light.
“We had the green light. We were coming from D. Tuazon heading to Cubao. When we were crossing, he just kept going straight. When he hit us, that was when it happened — we ended up overturned,” the driver said.
The ambulance was heading back to Cavite after bringing a patient to a hospital in Quezon City when the crash happened.
The ambulance driver claimed they failed to stop after the SUV suddenly appeared in front of them.
“They suddenly appeared at the intersection. Our brakes could no longer stop us. We failed to notice whether the light was red or green,” he said.
An ambulance passenger also claimed that the SUV was moving fast and allegedly failed to brake.
“We were driving through this area when the SUV was moving fast. It did not even brake,” the passenger said.
Both vehicles were removed from the road past 3 a.m.
The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) Traffic Sector 1 is investigating the incident.
