Suspicious package alarms residents, police in Muntinlupa
A suspicious package delivered to a home in an exclusive village in Muntinlupa caused alarm, prompting the involvement of a bomb disposal unit and the police.
The Muntinlupa police, together with an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team, inspected the package, which had exposed wiring, and later declared it a false alarm. The package turned out to be a car stereo.
The incident occurred at around 11:45 a.m. on June 24.
According to police, the parcel was delivered by a commercial courier service to the residence.
A household helper received the package and handed it to a police officer from the Police Security and Protection Group who was present at the address.
While opening the package, the officer noticed several loose internal wires.
Suspecting a potential safety hazard, he reported the matter to the Muntinlupa police for assistance.
First responders from the police’s Ayala Alabang Sub-station 5 arrived and secured the perimeter.
Technical personnel from the Muntinlupa Special Explosive Cordon Unit’s EOD team were dispatched to verify the contents of the parcel.
Upon inspection, the EOD personnel confirmed that the package contained no explosive or hazardous components. The exposed wiring belonged to an old, disassembled car stereo.
"Although this specific incident turned out to be a harmless car component, we highly commend the vigilance of the individual who reported the matter. When dealing with unexpected packages containing visible wiring, treating the item with extreme caution and immediately calling for professional EOD verification is precisely the correct protocol,” said Brig. Gen. Glenn Oliver Cino, director of the Southern Police District.
