The Manila Police District (MPD) on Wednesday warned the public against buying illegal abortion pills following the arrest of a 65-year-old woman in an entrapment operation in Quiapo.
The suspect was apprehended past 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 23, at the corner of Evangelista St. and Carriedo St. after allegedly selling abortion pills to an undercover operative.
Authorities said the operation was launched amid reports that such pills are being openly peddled in the area.
Police stressed that the sale and distribution of abortion pills remain illegal in the Philippines and may pose serious health risks to women due to a lack of proper medical supervision.
“Delikado ito sa kalusugan at labag sa batas (It is dangerous to health and against the law),” an MPD official said, urging the public to avoid purchasing unregistered or unauthorized medicines from street vendors.
The suspect is now under police custody and is expected to face charges for violating laws on the sale of unregistered drugs and other applicable offenses.
MPD said monitoring and operations will continue in Quiapo and other parts of Manila to curb the illegal sale of abortion-related products.
