The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) has started finalizing the comprehensive investigation report on the drowning of two college basketball players in Aurora on June 8.
Additional statements were taken from the mother of Rene Clert “Bobet” Baterbonia by CIDG operatives who were sent to Talacogon, Agusan del Sur to get her official sworn testimony as part of the case build-up.
Police said around 10 to 11 people are expected to be slapped with criminal charges and the investigation is examining whether criminal negligence or violations of the Anti-Hazing Act were committed.
Baterbonia’s mother was assisted by her legal counsel during the investigation on Thursday, June 25.
“The statement is now being consolidated, processed, and integrated as part of vital documentary evidence for the referral of criminal complaints before the Department of Justice (DOJ),” the CIDG statement read.
CIDG director Maj. Gen. Robert Alexander Morico said the field deployment underscores the institution's commitment to leaving no stone unturned in its investigation.
“The CIDG assures the family and the public that it is handling the active case with absolute thoroughness, transparency, and urgency to ensure that accountability is established and justice is properly served,” he said.
Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr., chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP), said they have been coordinating with the Department of Justice to facilitate the prompt evaluation of evidence and case records once the investigation is formally referred for prosecution.
“We assure the families that the investigation was conducted thoroughly, objectively, and based on evidence. We will submit our findings and recommendations to the Department of Justice, and we will pursue the truth wherever it leads,’ said Nartatez.
“No one will be exempt from accountability if the evidence establishes responsibility," he added.
