The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is considering relocating about 500 families living along Tuntong Creek in Barangay Manuyo Dos as part of a long-term solution to the persistent flooding problem in Las Piñas, Mayor April Aguilar said.
Aguilar noted that DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon raised the proposal during an inspection of Tuntong Creek on June 22, where officials assessed the waterway’s condition and discussed measures to strengthen flood-control efforts in the city.
According to the mayor, Dizon emphasized that the creek must be widened to improve water flow and increase its capacity during heavy rains.
However, he pointed out that the project cannot proceed unless families residing along the creek are relocated.
The DPWH chief stressed that flooding will continue to affect communities in Las Piñas if the waterway remains constricted by structures built along its banks.
Aguilar added that, based on Dizon’s assessment, widening the creek is essential to improving drainage and reducing flooding in the area.
The city government assured affected residents that any relocation program will be carried out in coordination with the national government and will provide families with safe, decent, and humane housing.
Aguilar reaffirmed the local government’s commitment to safeguarding residents’ welfare while pursuing sustainable flood mitigation measures to protect communities from recurring floods.
The proposed relocation is part of the city’s ongoing “Oplan Kontra Baha” initiative, which aims to enhance flood-control infrastructure and lessen the impact of flooding in Las Piñas and nearby areas.
