CEBU CITY – Banning the use of cellphones in schools and intensifying curfew ordinances are among the measures that have been taken by several local government units (LGUs) in Cebu province in the aftermath of the deadly shooting at the San Jose National High School in Tacloban City.
In Argao town, residents were reminded of the strict implementation of its Child Rescue Ordinance, which enforces a curfew for minors 18-years-old and below.
The ordinance bars minors from loitering in public spaces and business establishments from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m.
The LGU reminded the parents and guardians of their responsibility to ensure that their children comply with the ordinance.
Warnings and counseling await first-time violators. Repeated violations may result in community service, fines, and intervention programs from the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office.
The ordinance also prohibits business establishments from allowing minors to stay in their premises during curfew hours. Violations may result in fines ranging from P500 to P1,000 and possible closure of the establishment and cancellation of business permits.
The Moalboal LGU reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the law, safeguarding the welfare of its children, and ensuring accessibility of essential services, education, and opportunities.
“The local government unit of Moalboal affirms that safeguarding every child’s safety, dignity, and future is a shared responsibility of government, schools, families, civil society, the private sector, and all citizens, and commits to work together so that Moalboal remains a peaceful, nurturing, and progressive community for present and future generations,” the LGU said.
In Dumanjug, Mayor Efren "Gungun" Gica gathered school heads, district supervisors, and other stakeholders for an emergency meeting.
During the meeting, it was agreed that school gates must be manned by security personnel who will inspect all students, teachers, and staff before entering school premises.
Parents and guardians may only enter the campus with authorization from the school administration. Weapons, sharp objects, firearms, explosives, and other dangerous items are strictly prohibited.
Gica announced a total ban on the use of cellular phones in school will be enforced starting Wednesday, June 24. He said confiscated phones will be returned after classes but starting next week, seized cellphones will be confiscated and handled according to school policies.
Dumanjug will enforce a curfew prohibiting minors or Grade 10 students and below from loitering in public places starting at 8 p.m. A curfew for 18-years-old and below will start at 10 p.m.
