A pearl-inspired art exhibition explores beauty, resilience, and transformation

'The Allure of Pearls' brings together leading Filipino artists and marks the launch of jewelry designer Fai Co's first serious foray into visual art

For three decades, Hoseki Jewelry Art has transformed precious materials into pieces meant to be worn, cherished, and passed down through generations. This year, the Filipino jewelry house is marking its 30th anniversary not with another jewelry collection, but with an art exhibition inspired by one of nature's most extraordinary gems.
In partnership with Art Lounge Manila at The Podium in Mandaluyong City, “The Allure of Pearls” celebrates Hoseki's Pearl Jubilee through a collection of artworks that explore the enduring symbolism of pearls: beauty, resilience, patience, and transformation.
Founded in 1996 by internationally acclaimed jewelry designer Fai Co, together with partner and chief creative officer Knoi Austria Esmane, Hoseki has become one of the country's most distinguished jewelry houses, earning more than 30 international design awards and a loyal following for its collectible and wearable art.

The exhibition brings together an impressive roster of contemporary Filipino artists, including Flor Baradi, Percival Cruz, Joe Datuin, Ramon Orlina, Anna Orlina, Roel Obemio, and Knoi Esmane, among many others. At its heart is Roel Obemio's tribute to Johannes Vermeer's iconic “Girl with a Pearl Earring,” accompanied by paintings on spherical canvases inspired by the pearl itself.
Although Fai has spent most of his career creating jewelry, the exhibit also marks the launch of his first serious foray into visual art. “I've been a jeweler all my life, and now I'm creating artwork. We're celebrating our 30th anniversary, and this exhibition is, in a way, the launch of my first real art outside of jewelry,” he tells Manila Bulletin Lifestyle.

Looking back, Fai reflects on the journey that brought Hoseki to this milestone. "Thirty years ago, Hoseki began as a passion project fueled by a deep appreciation for craftsmanship, beauty, and the stories that jewelry can tell. What started as a small dream has grown into a lifelong journey."
At the far end of the exhibit is a wall filled with Fai’s artworks. Drawing from his decades of experience in jewelry design, the mixed-media pieces incorporate pearls, gemstones, aluminum alloy, precious resin, Signity zirconia, Plique-à-Jour enamel, and cubic zirconia. Tactile and sculptural, they immediately draw people in. Set against black velour fabric and detailed gold-painted frames, the works shimmer with color, texture, and luminosity, resembling oversized jewel boxes transformed into art.

More than decorative pieces, his works challenge conventional notions of where art belongs. Unlike paintings intended for living rooms or public spaces, Co envisions these pieces in intimate corners of the home.
"People ask me, ‘Can I put this in the living room?’ They say the works are very tempting because people want to touch them or pull things off them,” he says with a laugh. “But these artworks are supposed to be put in a very intimate place—sometimes a bedroom or a dresser. More specifically, they're for a place we call a boudoir.”
Derived from the French word for a lady's private sanctuary, the boudoir is where Fai imagines his works belonging—a personal space filled with treasured possessions and meaningful objects.
For Knoi, the anniversary is also an opportunity to look beyond the past. “Thirty years is a remarkable milestone. Longevity is not merely a measure of time but a testament to resilience, growth, and the ability to remain inspired while staying true to one's identity.”
That dialogue between tradition and innovation is highlighted throughout the exhibition. Pearls have captivated cultures for centuries, yet they continue to inspire fresh interpretations and contemporary expressions. As Fai puts it, "True artistry knows no boundaries."
