The Philippine Navy (PN) and Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) have arrived in Hawaii to join the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) Exercise 2026, marking a significant milestone as the two maritime services converge at the world’s largest international naval drill, it was announced on Tuesday, June 23.
The PN contingent aboard BRP Miguel Malvar (FFG6) and PCG contingent aboard BRP Gabriela Silang (OPV-8301) docked at Joint Base Pearl Harbor on Sunday, June 21, signaling the start of their participation in RIMPAC, a multinational exercise aimed at strengthening interoperability and maritime cooperation among participating navies.
Upon arrival, the PN and PCG delegations were received by officials of the Philippine Consulate General in Hawaii. Consul General Arman Talbo said the Filipino contingent carries the support of the community in Hawaii.
“To our officers and crew, know that you have the full support of the Philippine Consulate and the Filipino community here in Hawaii. We are proud of you, grateful of your service, and we wish you every success throughout the RIMPAC 2026. We are behind you,” he said.
Capt. Ryan L. Bakabak, commander of Naval Task Group 84, said the deployment of the Navy for the RIMPAC reflected more than military participation, stressing that the ship carries the hopes of Filipinos worldwide as the PN continues to build a more capable and mission-ready force.
“Today, I wish to emphasize that the ship we brought with us, BRP Miguel Malvar, does not solely belong to the Philippine Navy. She belongs to every Filipino. She is a symbol of our nation’s aspirations, our growing maritime capability, and our collective pride,” Bakabak said as he reflected on the weight of the PN’s participation to the exercise.
Furthermore, this year’s iteration of the exercise marks the first time that a coast guard organization – the PCG – other than the United States Coast Guard has joined the exercise. It was also the first time for the PCG to join the RIMPAC.
PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil L. Gavan expressed confidence in the contingent’s professionalism and dedication. He noted that the participation mirrored the organization’s “push for excellence and its evolving role as a reliable force within the international maritime community.”
The PCG leadership further underscored the organization's duty to safeguard the nation’s maritime domain. They maintained that this engagement will bolster regional security and cooperation.
