500 pigs killed due to ASF in San Enrique town in Negros Occidental
BACOLOD CITY – San Enrique, Negros Occidental Mayor Jilson Tubillara confirmed on Tuesday, June 23, that at least 500 pigs were killed in the municipality due to African Swine Fever (ASF).
Tubillara said that laboratory results released on Monday, June 22, revealed positive ASF cases affecting all 10 barangays in the town.
He said that he immediately ordered the strict implementation of biosecurity protocols, including border control inspection, to prevent the spread of ASF.
Tubillara said there are still uninfected pigs.
Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson said ASF infection was mostly reported in the southern part of the province.
“It’s a little over one percent population were affected. What’s important is we follow the protocols in addressing this,” he added.
Lacson said that if there’s mortality, pigs should be buried immediately, and disinfect pig farms.
“We will follow the protocols we did. We were successful before because they were re-populating. But unfortunately, it will take a while before it can be totally eradicated,” he added.
The province has prohibited the entry of pork and pork products from ASF-affected areas to protect its P6-billion swine industry.
