A 27-year-old motorcycle rider died days after a June 13 collision with an SUV driven by a man allegedly under the influence of alcohol in Marikina City.
On Monday, June 22, the Marikina City Police Station released a statement regarding the incident following the death of the victim on June 20.
Police said the incident occurred around 3:52 a.m. when the victim was traveling westbound along Gen. Ordoñez Street and approaching the intersection with Russet Street, while the SUV, driven by a 24-year-old student, was coming from the opposite direction.
During the maneuver, the front portion of the SUV collided with the right side of the motorcycle.
Due to the impact, the victim was thrown onto the pavement and sustained serious injuries, while the SUV veered toward the sidewalk and struck a street signpost before coming to a stop.
The rider was rushed to Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center (ARMMC) for medical treatment.
The SUV driver later underwent an Alcohol Breath Analyzer test conducted by the Land Transportation Office, which showed a positive result for blood alcohol concentration.
Marikina police said the driver was taken into custody after the incident and charged with reckless imprudence resulting in physical injuries and damage to property, and violation of Republic Act No. 10586 or the Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Act of 2013.
He was held at the Marikina City Police Station custodial facility before posting bail.
However, the station said it will submit supplemental and amended reports to the City Prosecutor’s Office for possible filing of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and damage to property after the rider died on June 20.
Meanwhile, amid reports circulating on social media regarding the alleged relationship of the SUV driver to a Marikina City official, police said they have not received any official confirmation of the matter.
“No member of the concerned family, nor any representative acting on their behalf, has raised, invoked, or represented any such relationship at any stage of the investigation,” Marikina CPS said.
It assured the public that the Marikina police conducted the investigation fairly, impartially, and in accordance with the law.
It also said that assistance was provided to those involved, and all evidence was evaluated following legal and procedural standards.
“The Marikina City Police Station remains steadfast in its commitment to uphold the rule of law, ensure accountability, and pursue justice without fear, favor, or partiality,” it said.
Authorities reiterated their appeal to all motorists to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or any intoxicating substance.
They said impaired driving poses a serious threat to public safety and remains a major cause of preventable injuries and deaths on the road.
