The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Tuesday, June 23, directed a thorough investigation into the attempted killing of a radio broadcaster in Roxas City, Capiz even as it urged media workers facing threats or intimidation to immediately coordinate with authorities for protection.
Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr., PNP chief, said the Police Regional Office in Western Visayas (PRO-6) and the Capiz Police Provincial Office (PPO) have been directed to identify the gunman and determine the motive behind the attack on Jay Lavapiez, 48, station manager of Baskog Radyo.
“I have directed the Police Regional Office 6 and the Capiz Police Provincial Office to conduct a swift, thorough, and evidence-based investigation to identify and hold the perpetrators of this attack accountable,” Nartatez said.
Lavapiez, also known on air as “Papang Jay,” survived an assassination attempt when a gunman opened fire at him while he was driving his Mitsubishi Adventure AUV on his way to his radio station around 5:40 a.m. on Monday, June 22, in Barangay Cagay.
Four bullets from a 9mm pistol hit the vehicle but Lavapiez escaped unharmed. Police said the circumstances of the attack showed intent to kill.
The PRO-6 has already created a special investigation team to determine whether the motive was linked to his work as a broadcaster or to personal matters.
Police have also extended the probe nationwide as part of efforts to address threats against members of the media.
“To our colleagues in the media who may feel vulnerable, please know that the PNP stands as your partner in ensuring a safe environment for your profession,” Nartatez said.
“I urge those who have received threats or feel intimidated to immediately coordinate with your local police stations or the Regional Public Information Office so we can provide the necessary security assessments and protection without delay. We will not allow any form of violence to silence the truth or threaten those who uphold our democracy,” he added.
