The International Criminal Court (ICC) on Tuesday, June 23, scheduled another status conference next month as preparations continue for the crimes against humanity trial of former President Rodrigo Duterte later this year.
The next status conference, set for July 14, was confirmed during the second status conference conducted by ICC Trial Chamber III in The Hague, where judges and parties discussed procedural matters ahead of the trial scheduled to open in November this year.
The upcoming conference is expected to allow the chamber to assess compliance with court-imposed deadlines and address any remaining issues related to trial preparations.
Focus on procedural matters
During the hearing, the chamber tackled several procedural issues, including deadlines for parties to submit observations on expert panel reports, protocols for handling confidential information, and limits on the prosecution’s trial brief.
The judges also discussed the scheduling of future proceedings as the case moves closer to trial.
The second status conference lasted less than 30 minutes and primarily focused on administrative and logistical matters rather than substantive arguments related to the charges.
Duterte again waives appearance
As in previous ICC proceedings, Duterte did not attend the hearing after formally waiving his right to be present.
His legal team represented him before Trial Chamber III, which is composed of Presiding Judge Joanna Korner and Judges Keebong Paek and Nicolas Guillou.
The hearing was conducted in public session, although the chamber reiterated that portions of future proceedings may be held in private when discussions involve witness protection, security concerns, or other sensitive matters.
Trial set for November
With another status conference scheduled for July 14, the court is expected to continue refining the timetable and procedural framework ahead of one of the most closely watched international criminal proceedings involving a former Asian head of state.
The Trial Chamber also identified Sept. 7, Oct. 13, and Nov. 2 as possible dates for additional status conferences should further proceedings be needed before the trial.
The former president faces three counts of crimes against humanity in connection with alleged killings linked to his anti-illegal drugs campaign during his tenure as president and as mayor of Davao City.
The case entered the trial phase after ICC judges confirmed the charges against Duterte in April 2026.
