The driver of former Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) district engineer Henry Alcantara on Tuesday, June 23, said that he delivered sealed boxes, which he suspected contained money, to individuals he associated with former DPWH Undersecretary Roberto Bernardo, former Caloocan Second District Representative Mitch Cajayon-Uy, and former party-list Representative Zaldy Co.
“Kay Cong. Mitch Cajayon po saka po ‘yung kay Cong. Zaldy Co (To Cong. Mitch Cajayon and to Cong. Zaldy Co),” witness Edrick Sandiego said when asked by the Sandiganbayan Fourth Division whether he had delivered the boxes to anyone other than Bernardo.
He, however, did not specify how many times he delivered boxes to them.
Sandiego also said he never saw the contents of the sealed boxes and merely suspected they contained money based on conversations he overheard between Alcantara and his chief of staff, Engineer Carlo Rivera, regarding projects worth millions of pesos.
He narrated that Bernardo’s drivers, identified as “Niño” and “Isko,” would usually contact him and meet him at the basement of Diamond Hotel, where he would turn over boxes from the Bulacan First District Engineering Office.
Sandiego said he delivered five boxes during the first delivery at Diamond Hotel and between seven and 10 boxes on the second occasion.
He said Alcantara had instructed him to turn over the boxes to Bernardo’s drivers.
Each box, he said, weighed around five to seven kilograms.
As of posting time, the individuals identified by the driver had yet to issue statements on the matter. Manila Bulletin will publish their responses once available.
Sandiego’s testimony forms part of the ongoing graft proceedings before the Sandiganbayan’s Fourth Division involving former senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. and six co-accused.
Prosecutors have accused the respondents of irregularities in connection with a P92.8-million flood control project in Pandi, Bulacan.
