Mamamayang Liberal (ML) Party-list Rep. Leila de Lima said the tragic Tacloban City school shooting--where at least three minors died--must not be used to spread "false narratives".
This, as De Lima joined on Monday, June 22 the growing list of lawmakers who have condemned the incident that rocked the nation.
"Nananawagan tayo sa agaran at komprehensibong imbestigasyon sa nakapanlulumo at nakababahalang insidenteng ito. Walang puwang ang ganitong karahasan sa lipunan, lalo na sa ating mga paaralan na una dapat sa prayoridad ang kaligtasan ng mga mag-aaral," she said.
(We call for an immediate and comprehensive investigation into this appalling and alarming incident. There is no place for such violence in society, especially in our schools where the safety of students should be the top priority.)
"Let us also refrain from spreading disinformation and false narratives. Our response should be based on facts, accountability and safeguarding the rights and welfare of our children," added the former senator and Department of Justice (DOJ) secretary.
Referring to the victims and their families, De Lima said, "We must also provide immediate psychological support and counseling to students, teachers, and other affected individuals."
She also underscored the need to establish more effective mechanisms to prevent similar incidents from happening again through the coordinated efforts of LGUs (local government units), the Department of Education (DepEd), the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) and other concerned government agencies.
The House senior deputy minority leader said these steps must include strict security in schools and establishments, strict regulation of gun ownership, and pursuit of illegal arms sales, as well as vigilant supervision and guidance of parents over their children.
"Lubos po tayong nakikiramay sa mga pamilya ng mga nasawing estudyante, at ipinagdarasal natin ang agarang paggaling ng mga nasugatan," De Lima added.
(We deeply condole with the families of the students who lost their lives, and we pray for the swift recovery of the injured.)
