Mayor Ruffy Biazon of Muntinlupa has called for an urgent meeting to assess security measures in local schools following the deadly mass shooting in Tacloban that claimed three lives and left seven others wounded.
“It is both shocking and alarming that the country has experienced its first mass shooting in a school, something that we Filipinos have seen only on international news,” Biazon said in a statement.
Although the incident occurred far from Muntinlupa, the mayor stressed that “the threat of such kind of violence does not distinguish geographic boundaries.”
Biazon said he will convene city, school, and security officials to evaluate vulnerabilities, strengthen defenses, and ensure preparedness against similar threats.
“This shooting will change the way we handle security and prepare for any eventuality in our schools,” he added.
The attack took place on June 22 at San Jose National High School in Tacloban.
Police identified two students, known by their aliases Rod and Nash, as suspects.
Authorities recovered a .38-caliber revolver and a 9mm Glock pistol allegedly used in the assault.
Biazon assured parents and residents that the city is committed to safeguarding students.
“We will do our best to ensure the safety and security of our schools and learners. Let us pray for the victims and their families as we join them in their time of grieving and distress,” he said.
