DSWD to release nearly ₱800 million in cash aid for 139,000 quake-hit families

Families affected by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake in parts of Mindanao will begin receiving government cash assistance on Tuesday, June 23.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) said at least 139,000 families in Davao Region and Soccsksargen are expected to receive assistance under its Emergency Cash Transfer (ECT) program, which has an estimated budget allocation of ₱799.59 million.
DSWD Disaster Response Management Bureau Director Maria Isabel Lanada said Social Welfare Secretary Rex Gatchalian will visit some of the hardest-hit areas to oversee the rollout of the program.

Ang ilan sa mga lugar na ito ay ang mga munisipalidad ng Glan at Malapatan sa Sarangani; General Santos City; at, Balut Island at Jose Abad Santos sa Davao Occidental. Mamimigay na po kami ng emergency cash transfer sa ating mga kababayan (On Tuesday, Secretary Rex Gatchalian will again visit areas severely affected by the earthquake. These include the municipalities of Glan and Malapatan in Sarangani, General Santos City, and Balut Island and Jose Abad Santos in Davao Occidental. The cash assistance comes after the DSWD completed the distribution of family food packs and other relief items to affected communities.
Lanada said the agency is now focusing on helping families recover from the extensive damage caused by the earthquake, which affected tens of thousands of homes.
“Naririnig niyo po si Secretary Rex Gatchalian; talagang ang command niya sa amin ay mag-conduct na ng emergency cash transfers kasi naibigay na natin yung mga family food packs and non-food items. So kung mapapansin niyo po sa data natin, may 84,580 na total damaged and partially damaged houses (As Secretary Rex Gatchalian has emphasized, his directive is for us to immediately conduct emergency cash transfers because we have already distributed family food packs and non-food items. Based on our data, there are 84,580 totally and partially damaged houses),” she said.
According to the DSWD, the ECT is an adaptive social protection measure that provides unconditional cash assistance to disaster-affected families to help them address immediate needs and begin rebuilding their lives after calamities.
The aid may be used for shelter repair, basic necessities, and other recovery-related expenses as affected communities work toward returning to normalcy.
