DepEd condemns Tacloban school shooting; mobilizes medical, psychosocial assistance

The Department of Education (DepEd) has started mobilizing assistance to the families of the 10 victims in the shooting incident inside the San Jose National High School in Tacloban City on Monday morning, June 22.
Police said three of the victims died while seven others were injured. Most of the victims are Grade 9 students, batchmates of the two minor gunmen.
“We strongly condemn this act of violence and extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims, as well as our earnest prayers for the swift recovery of those who were injured,” the DepEd said in a statement.
“The Central Office is now mobilizing assistance to our affected learners,” it added.
Aside from assistance, Deped said it is also working with other government agencies for the deployment of critical medical assistance and appropriate psychosocial interventions for the affected learners and personnel.
Police forces immediately deployed after the local police station received reports of gunfire inside the school.
One of the gunmen was arrested inside the school while the other one was collared in a follow-up operation. Seized from them were two handguns, a revolver and a 9mm pistol.
DepEd said it considers the incident as a high-alert situation.
“Our Central Office officials, alongside regional and division office personnel, are actively on the ground, coordinating closely with school authorities and law enforcement to secure the premises and ensure safety, security, and protection,” it said.
DepEd also urged the public to respect the privacy and dignity of all children involved and to allow the proper authorities to conduct a thorough and impartial inquiry.
“The safety, well-being, and mental health of our learners and personnel remain among the Department’s highest and most uncompromisable priorities. We remain committed to ensuring that our schools are secure, supportive environments for all,” the statement read.
