CEBU CITY – More than 700 farmers in the towns of Mabini and Alicia in Bohol province will benefit from an irrigation project inaugurated on Monday, June 22, by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.
The P833.37-million Mabini-Cayacay Small Reservoir Irrigation Project (SRIP) is expected to provide improved water supply and increased agricultural productivity.
Marcos emphasized the importance of irrigation projects in helping farmers become less dependent on rainfall.
“Ito ay isa sa ating mga mahahalagang hakbang upang tulungan ang mga magsasakang matagal nang umaasa lang sa ulan upang mapalago ang kanilang pananim (This is one of our important steps to help farmers who for a long time have been relying on rains to grow their crops),” Marcos said in his speech.
The project, implemented by the National Irrigation Administration (NIA), is designed to provide year-round irrigation water to 530 hectares of agricultural land, directly benefiting 717 farmers in Barangays Abaca, San Roque, Aguipo, and Cabidian in Mabini as well as Barangay Cayacay in Alicia.
The SRIP offers long-term assurance that water will continuously reach their farmlands, enabling them to improve crop production and increase their incomes.
The irrigation facility features a 32.20-meter-high and 210-meter-long dam, an ungated ogee weir spillway, and an 11.31-kilometer main canal that will efficiently deliver water to agricultural areas. Drawing water from the Baujanan and Cawasan Creeks, the system is expected to increase cropping intensity, improve farm yields, and strengthen local agricultural production.
Gov. Aris Aumentado highlighted the broader benefits of the project, noting that it will help uplift rural communities and create opportunities beyond farming.
"Beyond nourishing our fields and sustaining agricultural production, the Mabini-Cayacay SRIP will help create opportunities, improve livelihoods, and build a brighter future for generations to come. It is a catalyst for meaningful and inclusive progress in our countryside," Aumentado said.
Marcos cited several ongoing irrigation projects across Bohol that are expected to further enhance agricultural productivity. These include the Bunot-Bunot and Hibale Small Reservoir Irrigation Projects in Danao, which are now 44 percent complete; the Malinao Dam Improvement Project in Pilar; the Catungawan SRIP in Guindulman, and the Mandaug SRIP in Calape.
