Lady cop charged for extorting money from police applicant

BACOLOD CITY – A criminal complaint for robbery-extortion has been filed against a policewoman in Negros Island Region (NIR) for allegedly demanding money from an applicant in exchange for assistance in joining the Philippine National Police (PNP).
Police Brig. Gen. Romano Cardiño, Police Regional Office (PRO)-NIR chief, said that the complaint was filed by a male police applicant in this highly-urbanized city on June 11.
Cardiño said that they are checking if there are other complainants who will surface for additional charges.
The PRO-NIR encouraged individuals who may have encountered similar incidents or possess information about illegal recruitment-related activities involving police personnel to come forward and report them.
The complaint, filed before the Bacolod City Police Office, alleged that a policewoman assigned to the Regional Personnel Holding and Administrative Unit (RPHAU) received money from an aspiring police recruit and later requested additional payments.
Aside from the criminal case, Cardiño said that the policewoman’s administrative case is also underway. “Hopefully, it will be completed in a few months to determine the extent of the offense committed,” he added.
Cardiño said that the policewoman’s lawyer represented her in surrendering her service firearm to the regional office upon his directive.
Police Lt. Col. Joem Malong, PRO-NIR spokesperson, said that the policewoman is currently on floating status while her administrative case is under pre-charge evaluation.
