Dark secrets

THROUGH UNTRUE
Have you ever wondered why nightclubs are dimly lit? Darkness conceals defects, imperfections, and even ugliness. Darkness persuades us that what we cannot see does not exist. This is why secrets thrive in the shadows.
Many of our secrets take the form of addictions, mental health struggles, destructive tendencies, deep-seated resentments, character defects, or psychological and spiritual weaknesses. More often than not, however, the secrets we conceal are sins or even crimes that we would rather lock away, allowing them to fester in the shadows until they gradually gain power and eventually tyrannize us.
Darkness does not prevent our secrets from exposure. It merely delays their being found out. Ironically, the longer we hide them, the tighter their grip on us becomes. They burden our hearts with anxiety, rob us of peace, and even drive us into paranoia. We live in constant fear that if others discover what we have concealed, we will lose their respect and love.
History and contemporary society provide countless examples of how people are destroyed by their secrets even before these are revealed. Government officials, religious leaders, celebrities, politicians, and business tycoons have watched their careers, reputations, and relationships crumble because of concealed crimes, financial misconduct, infidelity, corruption, or abuse.
In today's Gospel, Jesus tells His apostles: “Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, nor secret that will not be known” (Matthew 10:26). His words refer primarily to the mystery of His person and mission, which the apostles are commissioned to proclaim openly. Yet before sending them out, He had already revealed a great part of that mystery when He declared: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life” (John 8:12).
Notice that Jesus did not say, “I will bring light into the world.” He emphatically declared, “I am the light.” His very presence unmasks what is false and illuminates the path to truth and salvation. His love “covers a multitude of sins” (1 Peter 4:8), not by concealing them, but by forgiving them and leading the repentant sinner toward conversion. What darkness seeks to hide, God's grace seeks to heal.
No amount of darkness can extinguish the flickering flame of a single candle. Yet our stubborn pride can snuff out the light that Christ seeks to shine upon our lives. The Gospel of John captures this tragedy with sobering clarity: “Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil” (John 3:19).
Pride breeds self-deception. Even when we know the harm our hidden sins and addictions can cause, we convince ourselves that exposing them would be worse. So we keep them buried in secrecy, unaware that the greatest danger is not that others might discover them, but that we may cling to them so tightly that they become part of who we are.
Yet God, in His mercy, has provided a way out of the darkness. He has placed within every human soul a faithful guide called conscience, a quiet but persistent voice that never ceases to warn, correct, and call us back to the truth. No amount of excuses, rationalizations, or convenient half-truths can ultimately silence its voice. When we listen to our conscience and surrender ourselves to its guidance, we experience the truth of these words: “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:5).
Are there hidden sins quietly destroying your peace while you continue to project an image of respectability? Are there aspects of your life that remain closed to God's grace? Bring them into the light. Christ must first uncover the wound before He can heal it. The world teaches us to hide our flaws, but Christ invites us to expose them to His mercy. Every secret surrendered to Christ becomes a doorway to freedom.
