The SIBOL Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) national team drew mixed results on Day 2 of the 2026 Asian Games Qualifiers, securing a win over Laos before suffering a defeat against Cambodia at the Resorts World Sentosa Convention Centre on Friday, June 19.
The result moves the Philippines to a 2-1 record, dropping to third place in the standings as the race for the limited Asian Games MLBB slots intensifies.
Despite the setback, Philippine Esports Organization (PeSO) executive director Marlon Marcelo maintained that SIBOL remains in a strong position to qualify for the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan.
“Mataas pa rin naman yung chance natin na mag-qualify at maganda naman yung pinakita ng Cambodia. So it’s more of, since bago yung patch, medyo nagkakapaan pa. Pero wala namang worry,” Marcelo said.
He added that the Philippines remains one of the most closely studied teams in the tournament, making adaptation crucial moving forward.
“Nakabantay lang rin kasi sila lahat sa atin. So we have to be more prepared sa mga ilalabas na strats,” he said.
Duane Pillas shines in SIBOL MLBB debut vs Laos
SIBOL opened Day 2 with a dominant performance against Laos, highlighted by the international debut of gold laner Duane Pillas. The 21-year-old delivered an immediate impact, helping the Philippines secure a fast 10-minute victory in Game 1.
Pillas finished with eight kills and seven assists against just one death on Karrie, capping the match with a triple kill in the closing moments.
He carried the momentum into Game 2, where he earned MVP honors on Harith with another eight kills and nine assists as SIBOL completed a clean sweep over Laos.
Cambodia comeback halts SIBOL momentum
SIBOL’s second match of the day against Cambodia saw a dramatic shift in momentum.
After building a commanding 6,000-gold lead, the Philippines appeared in control. However, Cambodia’s Hy Meng Kong (Yu Zhong) delivered a crucial backline catch on Dave Viana Jr.’s Harith, triggering a 4-for-1 exchange that led to a stolen Lord and erased SIBOL’s advantage.
Veteran player Sanford Vinuya’s Paquito helped stabilize SIBOL through split pushes and map pressure, eventually creating an opening for a 21st-minute Lord and a 2-for-1 trade to briefly regain control.
In the decider, SIBOL started strong with a 1,500-gold lead and a 3-0 kill advantage, but Cambodia capitalized on a key 10th-minute Lord fight to swing momentum.
The Cambodian squad secured a decisive four-man pickoff during the engagement, taking control of the map and securing the first Lord of Game 3.
Vincent Keo Phavin’s Claude then delivered a game-winning Blazing Duet during a 15th-minute team fight, producing a 3-0 wipe that sealed the series victory for Cambodia.
Despite the loss, SIBOL remains in contention for one of six available MLBB slots at the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya. The team is expected to regroup quickly as the qualifiers continue, with tighter margins now defining the race for qualification.
With a 2-1 record, the Philippines remains firmly in the hunt, but will need stronger consistency in upcoming matches to secure a spot in the Asian Games MLBB main stage.
