The Philippine National Police (PNP) said Friday, June 19, that it was finalizing extensive security preparations as the Senate gears up for the start of the impeachment trial against Vice President Sara Duterte.
Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr., PNP Chief, announced that personnel of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) will be deployed to secure the perimeter of the Senate complex to maintain peace and order, and ensure sufficient manpower for regular security rotations.
“We, in the PNP, are aware that this could be an emotionally-charged situation from both sides of the political fence. Our goal is to ensure that this will not lead to an incident that threatens not only their safety but also the peace and order,” Nartatez said.
A contingent of policemen has been securing the Senate premises since May 11.
The PNP gradually increased its deployment over the past weeks as the political situation inside the upper chamber heated up.
Nartatez clarified that policemen will remain strictly off-limits inside the Senate building and personnel will only enter the session hall or internal offices if they are called upon to respond to emergencies or untoward incidents.
To ensure seamless operations, the PNP is coordinating closely with the Office of the Senate Sergeant-At-Arms (OSAA) for a unified security implementation inside and outside the perimeter.
The PNP chief noted that the police force will replicate this coordination with the Sergeant-At-Arms of the House of Representatives, including providing security augmentation to safeguard House members who will act as prosecutors during the trial.
Security assistance will also be proposed and coordinated with private lawyers representing both the defense and prosecution teams.
“Your PNP has done this before and the security measures implemented before will be useful in mapping out plans to secure everybody,” Nartatez said.
He said the police leadership plans to constantly review its deployment strategies as the trial progresses.
“We will continue finetuning our security measures that include regular and real-time adjustments so that our personnel will always be prepared for all worst-case scenarios,” Nartatez added.
The House prosecution panel and Vice President Duterte's defense team held their first pretrial conference on Thursday, June 18, ahead of the start of her impeachment trial on July 6.
