Malacañang has declared June 24, 2026, Wednesday, a special nonworking day in the City of Manila to allow residents to celebrate the capital city's 455th founding anniversary and participate in activities marking the occasion.

Under Proclamation No. 1320, signed by Acting Executive Secretary Ralph Recto on June 16, June 24, which falls on a Wednesday, was declared a special nonworking day in Manila to give the people of the city "full opportunity to participate in the occasion and enjoy the celebration."

The Manila Public Information Office said the city will celebrate its 455th founding anniversary on the same day, with Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso set to deliver his State of the City Address (SOCA) at the Quirino Grandstand.

The SOCA will mark the first year of Domagoso's administration under the "Bilis Kilos 2.0" program, the city government said.

June 24 is traditionally celebrated as Manila Day, commemorating the founding of the City of Manila by Spanish conquistador Miguel López de Legazpi on June 24, 1571, making it one of the country's oldest cities and the seat of political power during the Spanish colonial period.

Other local holidays

Malacañang, through Proclamation No. 1321, also declared June 24 a special nonworking day in the Municipality of Lian, Batangas, for the Sambuhos Festival. The proclamation likewise cited the need to give residents full opportunity to participate in and enjoy the festivities.

The Sambuhos Festival is Lian's annual thanksgiving celebration held in honor of St. John the Baptist, the town's patron saint. The term sambuhos refers to the tradition of dousing or splashing water, symbolizing purification, renewal, and blessings associated with the saint, whose feast day is observed on June 24.

Meanwhile, June 18, 2026, was declared a special nonworking day in the Municipality of Montevista, Davao de Oro, for the Araw ng Montevista celebration. The declaration was made through Proclamation No. 1319.

Araw ng Montevista commemorates the founding anniversary of the municipality, which was created as a separate local government unit in what was then Davao del Norte. The annual celebration showcases the town's agricultural heritage, cultural identity, and achievements through civic, cultural, and community activities.

Under Section 15, Article VII of the Constitution and existing laws governing holidays, the President may declare special non-working days for local celebrations and commemorative events.
