Mindanao quake death toll now 78; Power outage, water supply woes affect 49 areas

The death toll from the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that shook Sarangani and nearby areas rose to 78 on Thursday, June 18, after 10 more fatalities were recorded in the continuing validation and search and retrieval operations in severely affected areas.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said seven of the new reported fatalities were retrieved in Davao Occidental while three others, also from the same province, were those initially reported as missing but were later validated to be dead.
From 33 missing, it went down to 30 and most of them are in Sarangani with 15 and Davao Occidental with 13. Two others are from South Cotabato.
Sarangani, Davao Occidental and South Cotabato were the hardest hit by the strong tremor on June 8 with multiple structure collapse and landslides.
Based on the NDRRMC data, most of the fatalities were from Sarangani with 33. South Cotabato with 24 and Davao Occidental with 20.
A total of 1,339 were reported injured while the affected individuals were 1.5 million, around 21,900 of them are still staying in 47 evacuation centers.
A total of 34 areas continue to suffer power outages due to the extent of damage by the quake while 15 areas are having water supply problems.
Funds and assistance packages continue to pour into the affected areas as the national government rushes the rehabilitation process to normalize the situation.
Food items are also being downloaded to the severely affected areas and evacuation centers where thousands of families that lost their homes to the quake have been seeking refuge.
