The way children communicate has changed dramatically in recent years. They can message friends instantly, search for information within seconds, and even generate ideas with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). Yet amid all these technological advances, one skill remains distinctly human: the ability to communicate with confidence.

It is this belief that inspired the launch of Deemcee Philippines, the local arm of an internationally recognized program for children ages five to 12 that focuses on confidence-building and public speaking.

Founded in Malaysia in 2017, Deemcee has spent the last nine years helping thousands of children develop self-confidence, communication skills, and leadership abilities. The program has since expanded to Australia, Singapore, Thailand, and now the Philippines, where it recently opened its first branch in Banawe, Quezon City.

For childhood friends-turned-cousins and co-owners Innah Gan-Julio and Hanz Lao, bringing Deemcee to the country was both a personal and professional decision.

Growing up shy and soft-spoken, principal Innah experienced firsthand how confidence can affect the way a child interacts with the world. "As a mom today, I hope my own children can enjoy that gift of confidence from an early age," she tells Manila Bulletin Lifestyle.

For executive director Hanz, whose background is in corporate marketing and brand building, the realization came much later. "I've seen how strong communication skills can open doors and create opportunities. While speaking with friends came naturally, communicating ideas to larger groups was something I had to learn much later in life. Looking back, I realize how valuable it would have been to build those skills earlier."

As children spend more time communicating through screens, many struggle with self-expression and the confidence to articulate their ideas. According to the founders, the rise of AI and digital technologies has made uniquely human skills even more valuable.

"AI can help us find information, generate content, and solve problems. But it cannot replace empathy, leadership, authenticity, creativity, or meaningful human connection. Children who can communicate clearly, think critically, collaborate with others, and confidently express their ideas will have an advantage regardless of what the future looks like,” she explains.

More than speeches and stage presentations, classes incorporate thematic storytelling, leadership activities, group discussions, impromptu speaking exercises, and collaborative activities that encourage children to step outside their comfort zones.

Hanz adds, "We actually see public speaking as the outcome, not the starting point. Confidence shows up in everyday moments—raising your hand in class, introducing yourself to someone new, sharing an opinion, ordering from a restaurant, asking questions, or standing up for what you believe in."

Classes are intentionally kept small, with no more than six students per session, allowing every child an opportunity to participate and receive individual guidance. Innah believes confidence often grows through seemingly small milestones. "For some children, that first win may simply be introducing themselves. Over time, those small victories build momentum and help them become more comfortable expressing themselves and sharing their ideas."

As Deemcee begins its journey in the Philippines, its founders hope every child leaves believing a little more in themselves. Innah adds, "Ultimately, Deemcee isn't just about creating better speakers. It's about helping children grow into confident, compassionate, and capable individuals."
