The local government units of Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, and Valenzuela cities joined the Second Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill on Thursday, June 18, to strengthen disaster preparedness and emergency response in their communities.

In Caloocan City, Mayor Dale Gonzalo “Along” Malapitan encouraged residents to actively participate in earthquake drills, whether at home, in school, or in their workplaces.

The Caloocan City government said the activity aimed to improve public awareness of safety measures before, during, and after an earthquake.

In Malabon City, the local government turned over an Emergency Disaster Box to the Malabon Schools Division Office during the drill held at Panghulo Elementary School-Main.

The drill, led by the Malabon Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, was joined by around 600 students, teachers, and school personnel.

According to the city’s Public Information Office, the Emergency Disaster Box contains protective gear, rescue tools, medical support items, lighting equipment, and other supplies that may be used during calamities.

Mayor Jeannie Sandoval said the recent earthquake in Mindanao should remind the public of the need to stay prepared for disasters.

“A recent earthquake struck Mindanao. This incident serves as a reminder to everyone, not only in our city but also in other places, that we must be prepared at all times for disasters and ensure our safety,” Sandoval said.

She added that the drill helps teach residents, especially the youth, the proper steps to take during an earthquake to protect their families and communities.

The city government said it had earlier turned over Emergency Disaster Boxes to the Bureau of Fire Protection and the Philippine National Police as part of its disaster response initiatives.

In Navotas City, students, teachers, and school personnel of Navotas North Bay Boulevard North Elementary School also joined the nationwide drill.

The Navotas City government said the activity highlighted the preparedness, discipline, and cooperation of learners, teachers, personnel, and stakeholders in promoting a culture of safety and disaster resilience.

In Valenzuela City, City Hall employees and residents also participated in the earthquake safety practice.

The Valenzuela City government said the activity sought to enhance emergency response, promote awareness among participants, and ensure readiness in the event of an earthquake.
