Ateneo de Davao University found ways to celebrate and honor its former player from Talacogon, Agusan del Sur as it officially named its senior high school playing grounds as Rene “Bobet” Baterbonia Covered Courts.
In its statement, signed by university president Fr. Karel S. San Juan, posted on Facebook Thursday, June 18, Ateneo de Davao announced through University Memorandum No. 2026-0052 the renaming of the courts where Baterbonia once played and trained.
It was a promise fulfilled by Rene’s alma mater a few days ago in his wake as the school wishes to make him an inspiration to future basketball aspirants.
“At his wake Mass on 14 June 2026, the University made a promise to his family. The Board has now given that promise permanent form,” wrote Ateneo de Davao, which also retired the No. 2 jersey of Rene.
“These are the courts where Bobet grew into the athlete and person we came to know, and his name will remain there to inspire the generations of students who come after him,” it added. “We ask the community to keep Bobet and his family in your prayers.”
Last week, Rene and his teammate Divine Adili tragically passed away due to drowning during their training camp in Dipaculao, Aurora.
