PNP reiterates responsible gun ownership amid issues raised vs elected officials
The Philippine National Police (PNP) reminded gun owners to follow and respect the rules and regulations on firearms ownership amid renewed public attention on firearm disclosures involving public officials.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio C. Nartatez, Jr. said the gun ownership rules are a privilege that can be stripped anytime as part of the measures to uphold accountability in all regulatory processes in the agency.
“The Philippine National Police reminds all firearm owners that ownership of firearms is a regulated privilege under the law. Every firearm must be properly licensed, registered, and regularly renewed with the PNP Firearms and Explosives Office,” Nartatez said.
“We urge strict compliance with all requirements on safe storage, documentation, and lawful possession. Transparency in firearm ownership is essential not only for accountability but also for public safety,” he added.
Earlier, Rep. Terry Ridon claimed that there are several firearms owned by Vice President Sara Duterte and her husband which were not declared in her statement of assets, liabilities and net worth.
Sen. Ronald Dela Rosa, on the other hand, is yet to surrender over 90 firearms reportedly registered under his name after all his gun permits was revoked by the PNP. Only 20 guns were surendered so far.
Nartatez said the reminder applies to all gun owners without exception as part of the police force’s mandate to regulate firearms ownership nationwide.
He added that compliance includes lawful possession and proper safekeeping of firearms.
Nartatez stressed that unlicensed or improperly documented firearms may result in administrative and criminal liabilities under existing laws.
“Regardless of status or position, all gun owners are subject to the same rules. The PNP enforces firearm laws equally and without exception,” said Nartatez.
