For the majority of folks, the tale of Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the gang ends with “Toy Story 3.”
That comes as no surprise, given the mixed reactions “Toy Story 4” received once it was announced. Yet, when the fourth film came out, it was well-received by both audiences and critics alike. We saw it finish with Woody finding a new home alongside Bo Peep, while Buzz, Jessie, and the rest of the gang remained with Bonnie.
Now, a fifth film has come to provide a glimpse into what our favorite toys are up to as new gadgets start to come in and take the attention away. Is it all necessary, or should we let Pixar retire Woody and friends indefinitely?
RISE OF TECH Lilypad, voiced by Greta Lee, acts as the latest threat to the toys as kids start preferring smart devices over toys.

In “Toy Story 5,” we find Jessie, Buzz, and all the rest of the toys staying over at Bonnie's, dealing with the sudden arrival of Lilypad, a tablet device meant to connect kids. Lilypad’s presence hinders Bonnie from playing with the toys, putting Jessie at risk of being set aside again.
Outside Bonnie’s home, Woody also witnesses how toys are being cast aside due to tech devices taking over. Audiences are hit with the ongoing question of how dangerous it is when kids are left to their own smart devices.
NEW TECH Conan O'Brien brings his comedic chops by lending his voice to Smarty Pants, a toilet training device.

Story-wise, “Toy Story 5” has a similar energy to the fourth film. Rather than focusing on the entire toy group’s dynamic, we find focus drawn toward a smaller group of characters. This movie serves as a treat for those curious about Jessie’s lore. Buzz, Woody, etc., act more as side characters in this one as we find Jessie taking center stage to show us how these old toys are dealing with the changing times. There is also the addition of new characters whom Jessie encounters along the way, with one voiced by the iconic ginger nightshow host, Conan O’Brien, who tries to convince Jessie that not all tech is bad.

What makes “Toy Story 5” a remarkable watch is seeing just how vastly the animation quality has improved since the first movie came out over 30 years ago. Humans and animals no longer have the somewhat freakish look they had in the first film. Looking over the environmental art is also a treat, as it feels almost lifelike. There are scenes when Bonnie plays that change the art style and take it into a unique, stylized direction that looks so beautifully made.
Now, for the aching question, did we really need this? While most decree that the franchise ends with the third film, “Toy Story 5,” though seemingly unnecessary, feels like bonus content for those who wish to see more of the characters’ world. We can keep the trilogy sacred, while the fourth and fifth films act as added lore for the diehard fans. Plus, most of those who watched the first film in theaters likely have their own families now to enjoy the latest film with. It’s a fun, lighthearted adventure that lets us enjoy these iconic characters one more time.
Manila Bulletin Lifestyle was invited to a special advance screening of “Toy Story 5” held at Trinoma’s A-Giant cinema. It is currently showing nationwide.
