The House majority leader from the north has assured the earthquake victims down south that they won't be neglected.
This, after Ilocos Norte 1st district Rep. Sandro Marcos bared in a chance interview Wednesday, June 17 that the House of Representatives remained in close coordination with lawmakers from areas affected by the 7.8-,magnitude tremblor that recently struck Sarangani and nearby provinces.
“We are in constant communication with all of those affected to make sure that the leadership gives everything that it can sa ating mga kababayan na apektado (to all our affected countrymen),” Rep. Marcos said.
The 32-year-old ranking legislator said assistance would depend on the needs identified by local officials and affected communities.
“Whether it be MAIP (Medical Assistance for Indigent Patients) or medical assistance, whether it be relief goods, whether it be anything that the House can provide,” he said.
Marcos noted that House Speaker Faustino “Bojie” Dy III had already visited General Santos City and Sarangani province to assess conditions on the ground and coordinate with local officials.
The Speaker inspected key facilities, including the General Santos International Airport, and met with local leaders as part of the House’s ongoing response efforts.
The powerful earthquake triggered tsunami warnings and affected several provinces across Mindanao, prompting evacuations and damage assessments in a number of communities.
Rep. Marcos said the House remains prepared to provide support to affected areas as recovery efforts continue.
“We are in constant communication with all of those affected,” he reiterated.
Resolution adopted
Later, during plenary session, the 300-plus strong legislative chamber adopted House Resolution No. 1131 which expressed the solons' “deepest sympathy, heartfelt concern, and unyielding support” for the victims of the magnitude 7.8 earthquake.
The resolution was jointly filed by Rep. Marcos, Dy, and Minority Leader 4Ps Party-list Rep. Marcelino "Nonoy" Libanan. It called on House members to “collectively and individually rise up to meet the challenges of relief and rehabilitation in the earthquake-stricken areas for the purpose of providing any form of assistance to the earthquake victims".
It also acknowledged the swift response of President Marcos, who directed government agencies to immediately coordinate disaster response efforts across affected areas.
The resolution noted that the disaster has claimed at least 68 lives, left 33 persons missing, injured hundreds more, and adversely affected thousands of families.
It also cited the widespread destruction caused by the quake, including the collapse of buildings and commercial establishments and damage to public facilities and educational institutions that disrupted classes and essential government services.
