GOSSIP GIRL: Pinoy pride, plenty of lumpia, and my Dutch homecoming

Spaarnwoude, The Netherlands - There are gigs, there are shows, and then there are homecomings disguised as concerts.

Last weekend, I returned to the Netherlands as a featured celebrity stand-up comedienne and singer at the Kalayaan Fiesta Foundation Netherlands (KFFN) 2026 Philippine Independence Day celebration, and what an unforgettable experience it was.

Held at Spaarnwoude Houtrak Park near Amsterdam, the event reminded me that Filipinos can recreate home anywhere in the world. Just add adobo, karaoke, a little tsismis, and 7,500 kababayans proudly waving Philippine flags under the European sun.

One of the people behind the festival’s success is Pieter Van Overbeeke, better known as Pedro Penduko, a Dutch host, actor, tourist guide, and beloved personality in the Filipino community. Pedro speaks Tagalog so fluently that many Filipinos in the Netherlands and Belgium book him as their tour guide whenever relatives come to visit. Naturally, tourists are stunned when they discover he’s Dutch. His vocabulary could probably outperform some Gen Z conversations made up entirely of emojis, abbreviations, and 6-7s.

Pedro has been handling much of KFFN’s entertainment programming for years and has witnessed the festival grow from a community gathering into the largest Filipino open-air Independence Day celebration in the Netherlands.

When I asked him about this year’s event, Pedro shared a compliment that touched me deeply.

“KFFN has hosted wonderful Filipino artists through the years, including Ice Seguerra and Janno Gibbs,” he said. “Every performer brings something unique, but you, Giselle, have a special ability to connect with the audience through your stand-up comedy and your songs. You don’t perform at people. You perform with them.”

Pedro recalled how attendees still talked about my previous appearance three years ago.

“People remembered the laughter, the interaction, and the energy. When Giselle is onstage, it feels less like a concert and more like a giant Filipino family reunion.”

Hearing that nearly made me cry. Fortunately, decades in show business have taught me how to smile gracefully while protecting expensive mascara.

The festival itself has come a long way. What started more than a decade ago as a simple gathering has evolved into a bustling mini-Manila filled with food stalls, regional delicacies, cultural performances, local entrepreneurs, and nonstop entertainment.

I was honored to share the stage with talented Euro-Filipino performers, community leaders, and cultural groups who continue to keep Filipino traditions alive across Europe.

But beyond the music, dancing, and heroic quantities of lumpia lies the true heart of KFFN. The festival raises funds for charitable projects both in the Netherlands and in the Philippines. Proceeds help support orphanages, children with special needs, educational initiatives, feeding programs, and humanitarian efforts that uplift vulnerable communities.

That is the beauty of Filipino gatherings abroad. We celebrate not only to have fun but also to help others. We laugh, sing, eat, dance, and somehow transform that joy into acts of service.

As the sun set over Spaarnwoude and thousands of smiling Filipinos headed home, I felt grateful—grateful for the invitation, grateful for the love, and grateful that wherever Filipinos may be, the spirit of bayanihan continues to thrive.

The Netherlands may be thousands of miles from Manila, but for one magical day, it felt wonderfully, unmistakably Filipino.
