Estrada says he will not use his position to shield himself from corruption allegations

Senator Jinggoy Estrada said he has taken steps to ensure that he would not use the powers and privileges of his office to shield himself from the allegations against him following the Sandiganbayan Second Division's order placing him under a 90-day preventive suspension.

In a statement issued on June 16, Estrada said that even before the anti-graft court released the suspension order, he had already demonstrated his commitment to respecting the legal process.
He cited his decision not to place himself under Senate protective custody and his voluntary surrender to authorities after a warrant of arrest was issued against him.
Estrada also said he immediately informed the Senate Secretary to stop the release of his salary.
"Kasabay ng aking desisyon na hindi magpasailalim sa protective custody ng Senado at ang aking boluntaryong pagsuko sa mga awtoridad nang lumabas ang warrant of arrest laban sa akin ay ang agarang pagbibigay-alam ko sa Senate Secretary na ipatigil muna ang aking sahod (Along with my decision not to place myself under Senate protective custody and my voluntary surrender to authorities when the warrant of arrest against me was issued, I immediately informed the Senate Secretary to temporarily stop the release of my salary),” he said.
The senator said he did not hesitate to take those steps because he believed there was no room for personal interest in a process aimed at establishing the truth.
He said he wanted to avoid any doubts about his intention to respect due process and prove himself in the proper forum.
