DAVAO City athletes in this year's Palaro.
DAVAO CITY – The Davao City Council honored Tuesday, June 16, the Davao Regional Athletic Association for their historic performance in this year’s Palarong Pambansa and paid tribute to the late 18-year-old Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagle Rene Clert N. Baterbonia who drowned in Dipaculao, Aurora recently.
Baterbonia was feted for bringing pride to the Davao region and remembered alongside fellow DAVRAA athletes, coaches, trainers, teachers, parents, and sports officials who helped the region secure its strongest-ever performance in the national competition last month in Agusan del Sur.
Coach Jess Evangelio of Ateneo de Davao University, in a Facebook post, remembered Baterbonia as more than just an athlete. He described him as a basketball competitor who inspired others through his dedication and resilience beyond his trophies and achievements.
Evangelio recalled Baterbonia's journey through competitive basketball, including his stint in the Gilas Pilipinas National Team tryouts, where he did not make the final roster but remained motivated to work harder and improve in his performance.
He said Baterbonia later used those experiences as motivation during the Palarong Pambansa, where he competed against top-caliber athletes, including players linked to national team programs. "Every setback became fuel for Rene to get better," the coach said.
The Davao City Council adopted a resolution, authored by Councilor Antoinette Principe, chairperson of the Committee on Education and Science and Technology, commending the Davao Eagles for their second place finish in the Palarong Pambansa secondary boys basketball tournament.
The Davao City Council congratulated Davao City student-athletes who contributed 45 medals – 14 golds, 10 silvers, and 17 bronzes – to the regional haul of 100 medals (34 golds, 32 silvers, and 34 bronzes).
Principe said in a privilege speech that the Davao region was third place or second runner-up, its highest finish in the history of the Palarong Pambansa.
She noted that the achievement marked the highest ranking ever recorded by the Davao region in the Palarong Pambansa and recognized the Davao City Sports Development Division as the fifth-best-performing division office nationwide among 220 divisions.
"Special recognition will be given to all medalists listed in the resolution," Principe said, adding that copies of the resolution will be furnished to the Department of Education-11 and its Davao City Division, and Davao City Sports Development Division, among others.
The council said the recognition serves as a celebration of the region's sporting success and a reminder of the lasting legacy left by young athletes who brought pride to Davao through their dedication and achievements in sports.
