The municipality of Puerto Galera in Occidental Mindoro declared a state of calamity due to a severe water shortage caused by a months-long dry spell.
The declaration under Resolution No. 005-2026 filed by the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council will fast-track the release of emergency response funds.
It was approved on Monday, June 15, during the 23rd regular session of the municipal council led by presiding officer Vice Mayor Rocky D. Ilagan.
The MDRRMC said the declaration will also ease penalties for affected water consumers.
Meanwhile, the White Beach Business Owners Association, which represents resort and restaurant operators in Puerto Galera, assured the public that tourism operations in Puerto Galera remain stable and fully operational amid the declaration.
“Most accommodations and establishments in the area maintain their own independent water supply systems, ensuring that guest services and stays are not affected. All tourism-related activities continue as scheduled under normal operations,” it said in an online statement.
“Visitors and future guests are advised that there is no cause for concern. Tourist arrivals remain welcome, and standard services across accredited establishments continue to be delivered without interruption.”
“We warmly invite tourists to continue visiting Puerto Galera and enjoy its natural beauty, beaches, and hospitality with peace of mind. There is no need for worry regarding water supply, as guest comfort remains a priority across the tourism community,” it added.
