GSIS launches ₱15,000 STEM subsidy for children of lower-income gov't workers
State-run Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) has opened 1,000 slots for ₱15,000 assistance per academic year for children of government workers to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) courses.
The initiative, known as the GSIS Subsidy for STEM Program (GSSP), will officially launch this June to support “qualified children of GSIS active members.”
The program is specifically targeted toward lower-income government employees.
Eligibility is limited to children of GSIS active members with permanent status and a “salary grade 15 and below.”
Furthermore, “eligible nominees must be incoming first-time college freshmen who obtained a general weighted average (GWA) of at least 90 percent in senior high school,” GSIS said.
GSIS President and General Manager Wick Veloso noted that the subsidy aligns with national goals for economic growth and innovation.
“Through the GSIS Subsidy for STEM Program, we aim to help the children of our members achieve their dreams and become the next generation of scientists, engineers, technologists, and innovators who will contribute to the development of the Philippines,” Veloso said.
To ensure social equity, the agency confirmed that “20 percent reserved for applicants from special sectors, including indigenous peoples (IPs), solo parent families, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and other qualified groups.”
This investment in human capital is part of a broader strategy to develop a “future-ready Filipino workforce.”
