The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has mobilized 153 quick response team members from its central and field offices to reinforce relief operations in Soccsksargen.
DSWD Assistant Secretary and spokesperson Irene Dumlao said on Tuesday, June 16 that personnel are being deployed in batches to support disaster response efforts in Glan, Sarangani, one of the areas most severely affected by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake on June 8.
The first batch of 94 responders arrived on June 11 and will remain on the ground until June 18, after which a new contingent from other regions will take over.
“Pinapadala natin sila ngayon in batches. Tapos papalitan sila ng panibagong batch from other regions (We are sending them now in batches. Then they will be replaced with a new batch from other regions),” Dumlao said.
According to the DSWD spokesperson, the teams are tasked with monitoring evacuation centers and assisting in the administration of the Family Access Card in Emergencies and Disasters (FACED), a profiling system used to gather demographic, socioeconomic, and damage-assessment data from affected families.
To further strengthen field operations, DSWD is also redeploying Mobile Command Centers (MCCs) and mobile kitchens from other regions to quake-hit communities in Mindanao.
“Malaking tulong po ang MCCs at mobile kitchens sa panahon ng sakuna. Kaya ipinahiram muna ng ibang field offices (FOs) natin ang kanilang mga MCCs at kitchen sa Mindanao para una, makapagbigay ng agarang impormasyon sa ating Disaster Response Command Center (DRCC) na ating central hub for disaster monitoring, reporting, and coordination of preparedness and response efforts (MCCs and Mobile Kitchens are a great help during disasters. That is why our other FOs have lent their MCCs and kitchens to Mindanao so that they can first provide immediate information to our DRCC, which is our central hub for disaster monitoring, reporting, and coordination of preparedness and response efforts),” Dumlao said.
The MCCs will serve as on-site coordination hubs, providing communication equipment, internet connectivity, and emergency power supply to support disaster monitoring and response efforts.
Meanwhile, mobile kitchens will complement the agency’s distribution of family food packs by providing freshly cooked meals to evacuees.
Dumlao added that while food packs remain essential, serving hot meals offers an added layer of comfort and care for families displaced by the disaster.
“Mahalaga na mayroon tayong mga family food packs, pero mahalaga rin na nakakapagbigay tayo ng mga putahe na lutong-bahay na may kasamang extra love at extra care. Para kahit papaano ay maramdaman nila na parang nasa bahay pa rin sila (It's important that we have family food packs, but it's also important that we can provide home-cooked meals with extra love and extra care. So that at least they can feel like they're still at home),” Dumlao said.
