A 27-year-old man flagged for a helmet violation was arrested in Quezon City after police discovered that the motorcycle he was riding had been reported stolen.
The suspect was intercepted along Central Avenue, Barangay New Era, at around 3 a.m. on Saturday, June 13, during an “Oplan Kandado” operation conducted by personnel of the Holy Spirit Police Station.
Police said officers flagged down the rider after noticing he was not wearing a helmet, prompting a routine inspection.
The suspect allegedly attempted to escape, triggering a brief chase before he was cornered by responding personnel.
Upon verification, he failed to present a driver’s license and documents for the motorcycle he was riding.
Further checks revealed that the motorcycle was not registered under his name, prompting police to coordinate with the San Mateo Municipal Police Station in Rizal.
Authorities later confirmed that the motorcycle had an active “flash alarm” after it was reported stolen in San Mateo.
Investigation showed that the vehicle’s owner had left the motorcycle parked with the key still attached due to the rain, which the suspect allegedly took advantage of around midnight.
Police said the owner admitted leaving the key so the motorcycle could be used again immediately after the rain stopped.
Records also showed that the suspect has prior criminal cases, including illegal possession of a bladed weapon in 2023 and theft in 2025.
The suspect, who refused to issue a statement, was turned over to the San Mateo Municipal Police Station for proper disposition as a complaint for violation of the New Anti-Carnapping Act was prepared.
He remains under police custody while investigation continues.
