6.2-magnitude offshore quake jolts Davao Oriental; Phivolcs says not an aftershock of Sarangani tremor

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck off the coast of Davao Oriental on Monday afternoon, June 15, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).
The earthquake, which was initially measured at magnitude 6.6, occurred at 5:18 p.m. Its epicenter was located 113 kilometers southeast of Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental, at a depth of 94 kilometers.
Based on Phivolcs Earthquake Information No. 2, the tremor was felt at Intensity V (strong) in Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental, and Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental.
It was also felt at Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Alabel, Glan, Kiamba, and Malapatan in Sarangani; General Santos City in South Cotabato; Koronadal City, Tampakan, and Tupi in South Cotabato; and Tacurong City in Sultan Kudarat.
The earthquake was reported at Intensity III (weak) in Mati City, Davao Oriental; and Banga, Norala, Polomolok, Surallah, and T'boli in South Cotabato.
Intensity II (slightly felt) was recorded in Davao City; Kidapawan City, M'lang, Matalam, and President Roxas in Cotabato; Maasim and Maitum in Sarangani; and Lake Sebu, Santo Niño, and Tantangan in South Cotabato.
Meanwhile, Intensity I (scarcely perceptible) was reported in Carmen, Cotabato, and Tandag City, Surigao del Sur.
Based on instrumental intensities recorded by earthquake monitoring stations, Intensity IV was registered in Digos City, Davao del Sur; Kiamba, Sarangani; and Koronadal City and Tupi, South Cotabato.
Intensity III was recorded in Nabunturan, Davao de Oro; Magsaysay, Davao del Sur; Maitum, Sarangani; Surallah, South Cotabato; and General Santos City.
Intensity II was measured in Davao City; Kidapawan City, M'lang, and President Roxas in Cotabato; and Malungon, Sarangani.
Meanwhile, Intensity I was logged in Santa Maria, Davao Occidental; Carmen, Cotabato; Malapatan, Sarangani; and T'boli, South Cotabato.
Phivolcs said damage is not expected from the offshore earthquake but warned that aftershocks may occur.
The agency has also confirmed that the tremor was not an aftershock of the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck off Sarangani on June 8.
As of 3 p.m. Monday, Phivolcs had recorded 6,233 aftershocks from the powerful Sarangani earthquake, with magnitudes ranging from 1.2 to 6.4. Of these, 78 were felt.
