Taylor Swift becomes the youngest woman inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame

NEW YORK (AP) — Taylor Swift made history Thursday night after becoming the youngest woman ever inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame at age 36.

Accepting the honor, Swift reflected on her journey as a songwriter, saying the craft came naturally to her from a young age.

“It was instinctual. No one taught me how to do it,” she said, noting that her raspy voice was the result of cheering during the evening’s performances and the previous night’s NBA Finals game between the New York Knicks and the San Antonio Spurs.

The singer-songwriter also paid tribute to her family, recalling how they left Pennsylvania and moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to support her dream of pursuing a music career.

“I will never be able to express my gratitude,” she said while fighting back tears.

Swift also offered advice to aspiring songwriters.

“You really have to prioritize what you love, down to your very core. Because you’ll need that,” she said.

Filmmaker Steven Spielberg introduced Swift during the ceremony, speaking about the enduring impact of songwriting before turning his attention to the pop superstar.

“There is something undeniable about how songs imprint on our souls,” Spielberg said. “Somehow Taylor knows us all too well.”

Swift acknowledged Spielberg in her acceptance speech, saying his work inspired her to trust her imagination.

Singer Sombr performed “Cardigan” and “Dear John” ahead of Swift’s segment.

The honor further cements Swift’s influence on contemporary pop music and songwriting. While she became the youngest woman to enter the Songwriters Hall of Fame, music legend Stevie Wonder remains the youngest inductee overall after beginning his recording career at age 13.

Swift was among several artists honored during the ceremony, including Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley of Kiss, Christopher “Tricky” Stewart, Alanis Morissette and Kenny Loggins.

Held at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City, the event celebrated the achievements of songwriters whose work has shaped popular music across generations.

The Songwriters Hall of Fame was established in 1969 to recognize the creators behind popular music. Songwriters become eligible for induction 20 years after the first commercial release of one of their songs.
