CANDON CITY — Alas Pilipinas showed grit but just couldn’t contain Iran’s assault as it dropped a 21-25, 12-25, 21-25 loss to settle for an eighth-place finish in the 2026 AVC Women’s Volleyball Cup at the Candon City Arena Sunday morning, June 14.
Eager to make a statement in their final game, the Nationals came out inspired and raced to a strong start, but the Iranians quickly turned the tides behind the firepower of Elaheh Poorsaleh Shahdehsari and tournament’s No. 1 scorer Fatemeh Khalili Chermahini as they tore the game apart.
Iran secured seventh place in the tournament presented by Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the City of Candon Mayor Eric D. Singson, while the country suffered its worst finish in the continental joust at eighth spot.
It can be remembered that the Philippines achieved back-to-back podium finishes highlighted by a silver medal last year in Vietnam with former captain Jia De Guzman and Angel Canino leading the way.
Elahe tallied 18 points on 17 attacks and one block, while Khalili chipped in nine points. Zahra Salehi and Yasna Ahankoub Roo contributed eight points apiece.
Alyssa Solomon starred for Alas after listing 12 points which was backed by Jovelyn Gonzaga’s six. Nina Ytang scored five while skipper Alyssa Valdez, for her part, posted four points on top of two digs, and two receptions.
"Andito kami to step up [as a veteran], bata palang ako gusto ko nang gawin 'to, na i-represent 'tong bansa, lalo sa mga bata na marami silang matutunan," said Gonzaga.
Prior to their exit, Alas Pilipinas, composed of veterans and young guns, capped its preliminary campaign with a 2-3 win-loss card, beating Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan while dropping games against Australia and eventual finalists South Korea and Chinese Taipei.
The Nationals were then relegated to the classification round where they were ultimately outclassed by the Iranians.
