What does history say about Game 6 of Ginebra-TNT Finals?

History favors the Kings in the contest that tips off at 7:30 p.m. with another big crowd expected to once again troop to the Big Dome — mostly expecting a coronation for the crowd darlings.

For one, according to PBA chief statistician Fidel Mangonon III, 54 of the 70 teams which took a 3-2 Finals lead went on to win the title. Forty of those teams ended up clinching the series in Game 6 — that’s a 57-percent chance, if based on record.

But TNT believes otherwise because history is also on its side. If there’s a team that has proven capable of pulling off the reversal after trailing in the Finals 3-2, it should be TNT.

And that happened not too long ago — in fact, just last season, against the same team it is facing today, Ginebra.

In the PBA Season 49 Commissioner’s Cup, the Tropang 5G trailed the Kings, 2-3, but managed to force a deciding Game 7 where it won, 87-83.

That loss was part of Ginebra’s Finals jinx against TNT last season as the Kings lost all of their two straight pairings.

The difference, however, is that the Kings are coming into Game 6 with the huge momentum following their 100-95 overtime win in Game 5 — big thanks to the heroics of Justin Brownlee.

More than Brownlee’s 54-point explosion, Cone believes his charges showed incredible grit in the contest, especially after trailing 80-87 in the last three minutes of regulation – something that they can carry over to Game 6.

“We had a lot of things that didn’t work well for us tonight. We had a lot of problems. We missed lay-ups, missed a lot of inside shots, we had a turnover down the stretch that was painful. We fell behind and played behind,” said Cone.

“Game 5, a lot of things didn’t go well for us and we had to really show the grit to win this game. And of course, it was led by (Justin),” he added.
