President Marcos has renewed the Philippines' commitment to multilateral cooperation and a rules-based international order, saying the country will continue working with all nations in pursuit of peace, stability, and sustainable development.
Speaking before members of the diplomatic corps during the Vin d'Honneur reception in Malacañan marking the 128th anniversary of Philippine Independence, the President said the country's commitment to the principles of the United Nations Charter remains unwavering.
“Our abiding commitment to these, to multilateralism, and the principles of the United Nations Charter remains steadfast and unwavering,” he said on June 12.
“As we have always done, as a founding member of the United Nations, the Philippines will work with all nations in pursuing peace, stability, sustainable development, and a rules-based international order,” he added.
“These we will always uphold and advance in the global community.”
Strength through partnerships
Marcos said the Philippines draws much of its strength from its enduring friendships and partnerships with other nations.
“In the work of nation-building, we find that much of the strength we need comes from our deep, enduring friendship with the countries that you represent,” he told foreign diplomats.
The President noted that his engagements with world leaders over the past four years have helped strengthen bilateral ties, expand people-to-people exchanges, and deepen cooperation on emerging global issues.
“My meetings with fellow leaders during my four years of administration provided an excellent opportunity to bolster our bilateral ties across many sectors, foster closer people-to-people relations, and develop closer cooperation on new and emerging issues of mutual concern, all in pursuit of shared peace, progress, and prosperity,” he said.
ASEAN in the spotlight
Marcos also highlighted the Philippines' role as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Chair this year, saying the country remains focused on strengthening regional cooperation amid global uncertainties.
The President recalled hosting the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu last month, where leaders emphasized closer regional integration and cooperation.
“Amid profound global uncertainties and shifting geopolitical winds, our ASEAN community responded with unity, wisdom, and resolve, and we continue to favor closer integration and cooperation amidst this increasingly fractured geostrategic environment,” he said.
Marcos noted that ASEAN leaders adopted the ASEAN Maritime Leaders' Declaration, reaffirming the bloc's commitment to maritime cooperation.
He also said summit discussions focused on energy security, food security, and the safety of ASEAN nationals.
The President added that he looks forward to welcoming fellow leaders and dialogue partners to the ASEAN Summit in November.
Marcos likewise announced that the Philippines will host the commemorative activity marking the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) on July 24.
The event, he said, will reaffirm ASEAN's commitment to the principles of mutual respect, non-interference, peaceful settlement of disputes, renunciation of the threat or use of force, and effective cooperation.
Thanks for UNSC support
Meanwhile, President Marcos expressed gratitude to members of the diplomatic corps for their support and goodwill toward the Philippines during its albeit unsuccessful campaign for a non-permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council.
“Thank you especially for your support and goodwill to the Philippines throughout our candidacy to the UN Security Council,” he said.
“We value your support, cooperation, and contribution to advancing our mutually beneficial cooperation with your respective countries and working with us to chart the path forward.”
The Vin d'Honneur is a traditional reception hosted by the President on New Year's Day and Independence Day, bringing together government officials and members of the diplomatic community to celebrate national milestones and strengthen international ties.
